Lena Ott // coloristFrom: Allentown, PA
Resides in: East Village, NYC
Influences: Laurie Foley, who in one word embodies 'seamlessness,' and is akin to watching a classical, master artist at work. I apprenticed with Laurie when I moved to New York in 2001. She introduced me to the balayage technique -- just one small example of her varied skill set -- and I haven't touched a foil since. I also learned from French colorist, Stephan Pous, who traveled to Bumble and Bumble to teach his style of balayage. Laurie and Stephan are pioneers of the technique, with two distinct and completely different approaches in their texture and placement. I took what I loved from each and developed my own individual style.
Inspiration: I try to combine the familiar, like nature references, with the surreal, like fantasy and pop. I do my best to translate that to my work.
Motivation: It's hard to describe. Hair--color in particular--is such an emotional thing. When you hit that right combination of colors (hair, skin, eyes, clothing, etc.) it's such a special effect... I love when this happens!
Motto: "If you're gonna do it, do it right." -my dad.
Favorite Quote: "He will be in the middle of a maneuver... and have the whole thing collapsing on him... and somehow in the center of that disaster, he will make something else out of it completely which becomes art." Skip Engblom talking about Jay Adams, Dogtown and Z-Boys
Dream Client: Women and Men who are 60+ gray, who want creative colors.
Mauricio Bermudez // coloristFrom: Miami, FL
Resides in: New York City
Influences: Orlando Pita, Laurie Foley, my father
Inspiration: I draw inspiration from art (museums, and especially street art.) I'm inspired when I travel to exotic destinations--specifically beach destinations and when I'm on the beach and the sun is setting. Music inspires me, rhythmic patterns, beautiful voices, and clever lyrics. My teammates inspire me.
Motivation: Knowing that I can always do better next time. My family.
Favorite Quote: "As you think, so shall you become." Bruce Lee
Dream Client: -Marylyn Monroe - To me, she is the ultimate platinum blonde. - Jessica Rabbit, she is the most amazing redhead - Mila Kunis, she always has the smokiest hues of brown.
Cara Craig // coloristFrom: Richmond, Virginia
Resides in: Brooklyn, New York
Influences: My friends and their art and the team at Suite Caroline Salon, who are my most direct influences right now.
Inspiration: The big picture, the small, small details, and everything about the process in between. Once connections are made conceptually, most anything can inspire me. I love geeking out about how people do things. There is so much value that can come from either being extremely specific, or going rogue with your process. Also inspiring – plants, flowers, and the ocean. And people who are passionate about what they do— they always give me energy.
Motivation: My family history and their work ethic keeps me motivated. My life has been full of supportive people and I'm determined to make them proud. I can get very meditative about doing my job. I believe there is power in acting with intention, from the smallest to the largest gesture. One painted highlight, when done with love and intention, is beyond beautiful.
Motto: Take care of business!
Favorite Quote: "I tell them dance begins when a moment of hurt combines with a moment of boredom. I tell them it’s the body's reaching, bringing air to itself. I tell them that it's the heart's triumph, the victory speech of the feet, the refinement of the animal lunge and flight, the purest metaphor of tribe and self. It's life flipping death the bird." – Lorrie Moore
Dream Client: Amelia Earhart and Dolly Parton. Amelia Earhart probably wouldn't want her hair color done, and that is the special challenge to dream about. I would love to color one –or five!— of Dolly Parton's wigs.
Malcolm Cuthbert // coloristFrom: Earth
Resides in: Crown Heights, New York
Influences: The essence of women. The girls in any urban neighborhood for following their own benchmark of beauty and fashion. The kids in the ballroom scene for always coming up with something genius on a low budget. All the genius people i've assisted over my 15 years as a hairdresser. My friends for being such style icons in their own ways. The fashion industry for its standards. My family for encouraging me to transcend societal norms.
Inspiration: Somewhere between the juxtaposition of Science & art, individualism & imitation, modesty & pretension lies my inspirations.
Motivation: The joy I feel after creating something I find visually satisfying.
Motto: Accommodate the masses.
Favorite Quote: "Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." George Bernard Shaw
Dream Client: Anybody who allows me complete creative control.
Amy Farid // stylist
From: Wichita, Kansas
Resides in: Brooklyn, NY
Influences: I grew up in Wichita, Kansas during the 90s – not the most glamorous place! I would escape into the pages of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Italian Vogue, The Face, and I-D. Ellen Von Unwerth, Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Paolo Roversi, Peter Lindberg, and Sante D'Orazio are the photographers that inspired me to want to do what I do today. I loved how the women in the photos in the 90’s were made into these strong, powerful characters. I realized then that hair and makeup transforms people, so I started looking at the credits to find out who the artists were that were responsible for these transformations. I soon became a huge fan of Oribe, Orlando Pita, Julien d'Ys, Odile Gilbert, and Guido Palau. Julien d'Ys is so much more than a hairstylist— he is a great artist and I admire everything he touches.
Inspiration: People, the way they dress, the way they do their hair and makeup. In NYC, the subway is a cornucopia of the multi-cultural, young and old, locals, implants, and immigrants. I like seeing people in that environment. They’re on their way to work, school or just to hang out with friends. Hairstylists inspire me as well. Art is also a very important part of life. Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Salvador Dali, David Yawman, Georgia O'Keefe and Egon Schiele are a few favorites. Movies are very inspirational, too. I enjoy recreating a character for cinematic, still pictures. I find the following directors masters of the film game: Pedro Almodovar, David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, Lars Von Trier, Stanley Kubrick, and Wes Anderson. They provide us with compelling characters with great hair!
Motivation: I am motivated by life, the universe and everything.
Motto: Don't panic!
Favorite Quote: "He whose face gives no light, shall never become a star." -William BlakeDream Client: I would love to have done Frida Kahlo's hair. More than actually do her hair, I would have enjoyed watching her do her own hair. She had really long hair and would do these beautiful braids and tie them up on top of her head. Frida would put flowers in her hair, too, which is one of my favorite things.
Tiffani Patchett // stylistFrom: Portland, Oregon
Resides in: Brooklyn, NY
Influences: I am proud to say that I have been working with someone that has influenced me for a very long time, editorial stylist Guido Palau. He has been inspiring the fashion world for over 20 years with an eye for hair styling so refined that it becomes art more than hair dressing. His eye has taught me see the nuances and details in personalizing what it best suited for each individual person. In my personal life I am influenced by the Chef Dan Barber. I admire his dedication to creating sustainable farming systems to produce the best tasting food. He has made me take more interest in knowing where my food comes from, how it was produced and the importance of supporting local farms.
Inspiration: I find humans to be the most inspiring. People watching is one of my favorite things to do. I'm constantly getting inspiration and gathering new ideas from people whether it be my coworkers, friends, people on the subway or in my travels.
Motivation: New York. This city has motivated, pushed and exposed me to things that I never imagined were possible. It keeps me wanting and striving to be the best that I can possibly be.
Favorite Quote: "I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done" Lucille Ball
Dream Client: Amy Schumer
Johnny Haeger // stylistFrom: Cincinnati, Ohio
Resides in: Brooklyn, NY
Influences: Some of my influences include Oribe, Laurent Philippon, Horst Rechelbacher, Howard McLaren and all of the amazingly talented educators and peers I have had the pleasure to learn from over the course of my career.
Inspiration: Film, art, nature, novels, history, friends, music, fashion! Also, just being around creative people helps me to create.
Motivation: What keeps me motivated is seeing people light up when they feel great about the way they look. Also, education plays a huge part. Striving to grow as a craftsman and educating others keeps me moving forward.
Motto: The most important thing is to enjoy your life and to be happy, it's all that matters. Work to become, not to acquire. And, you only live once!
Favorite Quote: "Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!" Audrey Hepburn
Dream Client: There are so many but I think Marie Antoinette would have been fun! All of her wigs were so beautiful and glamorous. The entire cast of Downtown Abbey because I'm slightly obsessed and their hair is on point! Keira Knightly, because her style is always so effortlessly beautiful.
